Motorola is going all-in on the Edge 40’s photography prowess, not in terms of the sheer number of cameras but the performance of said lenses. That’s particularly true of the new 50MP main snapper that, while identical to its predecessor on paper, boasts a couple of key upgrades that should deliver impressive results. In my time testing the phone, it was fast and responsive, with no lag. Whatever I was doing, I never once thought, "Hmm, this is annoying, I need more power." The Dimensity 8020 didn't call attention to itself at all – it just quietly got on with the tasks at hand without protest, and I consider that an admirable quality.

The Edge 40 has the same design language as the Edge 40 Pro.The slim smartphone's corners and edges are just as rounded as the screen's long sides and converge into a thin aluminum frame. Overall, the Edge 40 is excellently manufactured and makes a valuable and robust impression. At a height of 7.49 millimeters and a maximum weight of 171 grams, it is very light and thin for a smartphone of its size. This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms). The Edge 40 Pro display is great, it's nice and vibrant, with the option to turn down the saturation if you want something a little more neutral; It's a great-looking display, boosted by the 1300 nit brightness to help it cut through reflections on sunny days. This also puts some oomph into HDR content, with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision both supported - if you can find content that supports it.

That’s especially true of the new upgraded 50MP camera and its wide f/1.4 aperture, delivering truly impressive low-light photography considering its mid-range price, and the display is stunning too. The only downside to the f/1.4 aperture of the main lens is the shallow depth of field. While it does make for a nice close-up shot, it also means it’s fairly easy for the phone to miss focus and make the subject appear a little soft. It doesn’t happen as often as I expected, likely down to the PDAF autofocus tech, but it was something I noticed every now and again. We test every mobile phone we review thoroughly. We’ll always tell you what we find and we never, ever, accept money to review a product. It’s worth noting that the Motorola Edge 40 has a similar curved-edged display as the Motorola Edge 40 Pro. While many Android phones have slightly curved displays, I had a bit of an issue adjusting to this one in particular. Whether it’s because of the phone’s slightly thinner frame compared to larger phones, my fairly big hands, or the fact that I'm used to using much larger phones than the Edge 40, I found that the curved display edges made typing or gaming a little awkward, although if you have smaller hands, or don't hop between phones as often as I do, then this may not be an issue for you.

Video performance is rather solid with OIS smoothing out jittery hand movements – at least when using the main rear sensor – with fun video modes like Portrait Video and a unique stabilisation mode that’ll work when rotated a full 360 degrees further improving the experience. It caps out at 4K@30fps both on the front and rear, with the former being fairly unique in the mid-range market. Performance In all honesty, I preferred shooting on the standard Photo mode as I found the shallow f/1.4 aperture would deliver a softer, more natural bokeh than the OTT option from the Portrait app. The Motorola Edge 40 runs Motorola's MYUX software, powered by Android 13. It's a very Pixel-like OS that's clean and unobtrusive. There’s also ReadyFor, Motorola’s relatively unsung hero. It not only allows you to use your smartphone in a desktop mode resembling Windows 10 when plugged into an external monitor, but it boasts impressive support for Windows. You can run Android apps on your PC or laptop, along with interact with incoming notifications and even use the phone’s cameras as a webcam.Motorola equips the Edge 40 with the MediaTek Dimensity 8020.The eight-core SoC works with 8 cores, which are divided into four ARM Cortex A78 performance cores (2.6 GHz) and four ARM Cortex A55 energy-saving cores (2 GHz). The ARM Mali-G77 MP9 serves as the integrated graphics unit. The Edge 40 doesn't really make a good impression in regard to the updates, because you shouldn't expect more than two OS upgrades. If that doesn't bother you any more than the USB-C port that runs at USB 2.0 speed, or the missing microSD slot, you'll get a very solid midrange smartphone in the Edge 40.
