About this deal

Also similar to the Voigtlander UWA primes and some of the wide Laowa primes ( 12mm 2.8 and 15mm 2.0) this lens shows some slight green color cast in the corners which can become visible with bright skies. Sharpness infinity Also longitudinal CA (including purple fringing) are corrected so well, they are hardly noticeable. Alternatives Already in the sharpness section we saw solid but not outstanding corner sharpness and most of the time the performance there is closely related to the coma correction. Generally the correction is decent at f/2.8 and I think slightly better than the TTArtisan’s. Even stopped down to f/5.6 the corners don’t look perfectly clean though. As do all lenses of its type, the TTArtisan exhibited darkening of the corners, or vignetting, in this case by about 1.3 stops at the extreme corners at f/2.8, and just less than one stop at f/4. This was easily correctable in raw image processing to make the sky look uniformly illuminated.

But this is not the whole story, without going too much into detail of different fisheye projections (you can do that here or here) the shape of objects closer to the corners stays closer to what they actually are. You can see that in the comparison above, the reflection of the lamp is round in the fisheye image while it is streched in the image of the rectilinear lens. So, depending on what part of the image you look at, the distortion of a fisheye lens may actually be less, not more. In conclusion, I was impressed with the new TTArtisan 11mm, especially considering its price. For mirrorless shooters, it can open up some new photo opportunities at low cost, and without taking up much space in your camera bag. If you are looking for a similar fish-eye lens for a DSLR camera, I can recommend the older Rokinon manual 12mm f/2.8 ED, through at double the price.

The AstrHori 12mm 2.8 Fisheye was kindly provided free of charge by AstrHori for reviewing purpose for a few weeks. What is a fisheye lens? The optical design is rather complex, the MTF claim great performance across frame already at f/2.8 and I don’t see any decentering issues with this sample, so what happened? Nevertheless, I personally think the usefulness of fisheye lenses is a bit limited. They are mostly useful for creating 360° panoramas, funny animal pictures/portraits and sometimes astrophotography. You can still use them for landscape photography – as some of the sample images may show – but it is not that easy to find compositions that actually work, so I would not recommend a fisheye lenses to anyone who is just starting with photography. Handling / Build Quality TTArtisan 11mm 2.8 Fisheye Astrophotographers make use of every focal length lens available, with the widest being fish-eye lenses that take in a full sweep of up to 180 degrees (°) of sky. While they are specialized lenses, fish-eyes allow unique images not possible with any other lens, even using techniques such as shooting panoramas.

Stopped down to f/4 all the lenses improved at the corners, though the TTArtisan still showed some astigmatism. The Rokinon 12mm does provide a slightly wider field of view than the 11mm TTArtisan, despite its 1mm longer focal length. In terms of the color scheme this looks very much like a Leica M lens including the famous red dot. Markings are yellow/white (seem to be slightly engraved and filled with paint) and the focus ring has a very nice resistance and turns about 90° from the minimum focus distance of 0.17 m to infinity.

The TTArtisan 11mm f/2.8 Fisheye is a manual focus lens that delivers 180° across the diagonal of the frame, what is sometimes called a "full frame fisheye." Full frame in that instance means that the fisheye produces image data all the way into the corners of the frame, and not a circular image as traditional fisheyes do.

Proper rangefinder focusing would make all of this simpler, at least on an M, whose EVF and live view are stuttery messes. Other mirrorless cameras fare better, but not better enough to ensure reliable focus speed and accuracy. Yes, zone focusing works fine. Yes, stopping down yields deep focus. But none of that is as accurate or fast as focusing through a discrete rangefinder. With our usual approach we cannot get decent values on the vignetting of fish-eye lenses. What I can tell you is that the vignetting figures are significantly lower than those of rectilinear ultra wide angle lenses, especially compact ones. Sony A7rII | AstrHori 12mm 2.8 Fisheye | f/2.8 The wide-angle design is also complemented by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, to suit working in available lighting conditions. If you don’t want an object to distort like a magnifying glass held at arm’s length, keep that object in the middle, and small in the frame. Objects around it will bend, but the subject will remain largely planar. If you must, you can correct much of the fisheye business in post. The across frame performance is solid from f/2.8 but stopping down doesn’t change much actually. The midframe gets slightly sharper at f/5.6 and the corners look best at f/11 but in both cases there isn’t that huge difference compared to shooting this lens wide open. The performance is actually similar to what I have seen with the smaller TTArtisan 11mm 2.8 Fisheye.
