About this deal

Montgomery's latest is an enthralling, Narnia-flavoured novel with the folkloric feel of a Christmas classic." Guardian There is absolutely nothing I hated from this book. This is the Greatest Book I Have Ever Read. That is my rating! A story of real and rare power - The Midnight Guardians is one of the best books I've read in years." Kiran Millwood Hargrave"The Midnight Guardians is torch-under-the-duvet, can't-stop-reading magic.

I think that the time it was set in appealed to me, and, after reading the blurb, I really wanted to read it since it sounded really interesting. My sister had also read this book, and she had recommended it to me as well, so I think that these factors are what caused me to choose this book. The Midnight Guardians is torch-under-the-duvet, can't-stop-reading magic. British folklore rebooted ... in an edge-of-your-seat, heart-filled search for hope in the darkest hour. Piers Torday Rather than learn anything new from this book, it confirmed what I knew already about the war, but I did love that nearly every chapter there would be a small news article. I loved that it was in the era of WW2 because that made Rose’s Rescue and the plot and setting of the whole book comprehendible, yet amazing. Imagine a delicious milkshake made with the blended ingredients of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lord of the Rings, Five Children on the Western Front, and a special pinch of additional magic. There you have The Midnight Guardians. Drily humorous at times, utterly terrifying at others, this tale will whisk you away to another time that is both instantly recognisable and completely alien. The Midnight Guardians is a classic in the making, and I loved every second of it. - The School Librarian Hope shines the brightest… When Col’s childhood imaginary friends come to life, he discovers a world where myths and legends are real. Accompanied by his guardians – a six-foot tiger, a badger in a waistcoat and a miniature knight – Col must travel to Blitz-bombed London to save his sister. But there are darker forces at work, even than the Nazi bombings. Soon Col is pursued by the terrifying Midwinter King, who is determined to bring an eternal darkness down over everything…

Spectacular... A story of real and rare power - The Midnight Guardians is one of the best books I've read in years. - Kiran Millwood Hargrave The Midnight Guardians is timeless story-telling with a magical heart; a tale of enchantment and friendship in the cold of adversity; has all the charm of the The Box of Delights, all the magic and fellowship of The Lord of the Rings, all the warmth of a timeless story, told between friends round a winter fire. It's also brilliantly inventive - funny where it needs to be, and true in the way all good stories are. - Thomas Taylor

Shortlisted for the Books for Older Readers category, Children's Book Awards 2022 | Shortlisted for the Costa Children's Book Award 2021Beautifully drawn fantasy characters ... a story of hope and love underpinned by witty humour." Daily Mail I inhaled this wonderful book in one sitting ... humour, beautiful writing, heartbreak, hope, and a fat badger in a waistcoat. I'll be recommending it to everyone." Katya Balen Glorious! I think this is Ross Montgomery's best book yet: an adventure across WWII wintry Britain with a Kindertransportee, a boy dressed in shorts and his three imaginary friends. A joy of a joy of a thing.\" Katherine Rundell It should be noted: I'm not one to underestimate the reading ability of children. I just really dont think that this book has been marketed to the right age group. The storyline (all about imaginary friends) and the front cover (4 characters riding on the tiger!!!) Would really appeal to younger readers, readers perhaps younger than 11 years old, and i think 11 years old would be the absolutely youngest limit for reading this book and dealing with the themes of the story. This book explores grief, magic, racism, WWII, mind control, and monsters.

A triumph." Sophie Anderson"Brimming with imagination and warmth, and powered by the strongest magic of all - hope. This book touch my deep emotion. I laugh, I cried, I smile with it. It brings me warmth and gosh! The guardians made me so emotional. I love them SO SO MUCH! The book is beautiful and whimsical, and sometimes terrifying, it made me laugh and it made me cry. It truly has everything that I love in a book, and I cannot recommend it enough. I can't wait to get my hands on a finished copy, and it will definitely sit amongst the more special books on my shelves.Beautifully drawn fantasy characters ... a story of hope and love underpinned by witty humour.\" Daily Mail With the spirit of Narnia, but a heart of its own. The Midnight Guardians is totally enchanting. I gobbled up every word." Aisha Bushby The King of Rogues has to be my favourite character. He is everything I look for in a character as he is brave, a master knight and has a constant comedic quarrel with many characters as well as making all the other characters call him just Rogue which creates some comedic arguments. The characters are relatable, even the imaginary friends have traits you see in a lot of people. Col, although just a young boy is wise beyond his years, I think a lot of children who were living through the war were, they had to be resourceful, learn to live with death and destruction as well as being separated from their families. Beautifully drawn fantasy characters ... a story of hope and love underpinned by witty humour.” Daily Mail

Spectacular. A story of real and rare power - The Midnight Guardians is one of the best books I've read in years." Kiran Millwood Hargrave I really enjoyed the Guardians. I found Pendlebury, the flying tiger to be hilariously bad at joke telling, Mr Noakes an interesting badger in a tuxedo and the King of Rogues who made sure you had to call him King of Rogues not just Rogues, and who always had a funny complaint. I would heavily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading as it is very interesting and has many high speed moments with a historical theme behind it. Following the death of their father, 12-year-old Col is evacuated during the Second World War, while his big sister Rose stays in London to help with the war effort. Learning that Rose is in terrible danger, Col embarks on a perilous journey to save her.
