While I was suffering through “Narrow Dog to Carcassonne” I had a conversation with a good friend of mine.

This is about an older couple and their dog from England who take a narrow boat across the English Channel. His love for his wife and for Jim, the Whippet narrow dog of the title, come through on every page; as does everyone's need to sometimes go off alone or become surly (dogs and people) when confined to tight quarters for long periods. He's clearly a well-read man and at times you could almost describe his style as 'stream of consciousness' but ultimately unless, like me, you share his love of canals and boating, running, beer and France, and appreciate his sense of humour, you are unlikely to enjoy this book. Her three children have all reproduced themselves, removing doubts about whether she and Terry are the same species. I found no problem with the writing style at all, it's always pretty obvious who's saying what to whom, absence of quotation marks notwithstanding.

We are selling our house and our possessions, giving what is left to the poor, and having a narrowboat built, on which we will live out our days. However, R L Stephenson in his "Inland Voyage" or Jerome K Jerome in his "Three men in a Boat" didn't supply maps either, and both are classics.The hilarious and true story of two senior-citizens and their whippet dog who hatch, plan and carry out a “lunatic scheme” to sail from Stone in Staffordshire to Carcassonne in the South of France.
